The Ultimate Sri Lanka Packing List for a 30 Day Tuk-Tuk Adventure

What We Packed (and What We'd Pack Again)
Packing for Sri Lanka wasn't quite as straightforward as we expected. Over 30 days we experienced tropical beaches, cool mountain towns, heavy rain, scorching sunshine and everything in between. Travelling by tuk-tuk also meant space was limited, so every item had to earn its place.
Rather than giving you a generic packing list, we've organised ours by activity - because what you'll need on safari is very different to a day exploring temples or relaxing on the beach.
Backpack or Suitcase?

If you're travelling by tuk-tuk, we'd recommend a soft backpack over a hard-shell suitcase every time. Soft backpacks are much easier to fit behind the rear seat, mould to the available space and are far simpler to lift in and out each day. We each travelled with a large backpack, and they fitted perfectly behind the seat without compromising passenger space. It's one of those small decisions that makes life on the road much easier.
Not So Grey Tip: Pack lighter than you think you need. Not only will your backpack fit more easily in the tuk-tuk, but you'll thank yourself every time you move accommodation.
Beach Days
Sri Lanka's coastline is stunning, and you'll probably spend plenty of time in and around the water.

We packed:
Swimmers
Rash shirt (great for snorkelling and long beach days)
Cotton lightweight overshirt
Thongs/sandals
Sunglasses
Wide-brim hat or cap
Reef-safe sunscreen
Dry bag for electronics
Quick-dry towel
Not So Grey Tip: Beaches vary throughout the year depending on the monsoon seasons, so check which coast has the best weather before you travel.
Temples & Cultural Sites
Many temples require shoulders and knees to be covered, and you'll be removing your shoes frequently.

We packed:
Lightweight linen shirt
Loose lightweight pants or longer shorts/skirt
Sarong to cover legs or shoulders
Tropicfeel Shoes (combo of sneakers and water shoes)
Easy-to-remove sandals
Socks (hot temple grounds can burn your feet)
Not So Grey Tip: Carry a lightweight scarf or sarong—it takes up almost no room and is perfect for covering your shoulders when needed.
Safari Adventures
Early mornings or can be surprisingly cool before the day heats up.
We packed:
Neutral-coloured clothing
Light jumper
Reusable water bottle
Insect repellent
Cap
Not So Grey Tip: The safari isn't just about spotting a leopard. Slow down, enjoy the entire experience and appreciate all the incredible wildlife around you.
Hill Country

This surprised us the most.
Nuwara Eliya and Ella were cold, wet and drizzly during our visit, and we were very grateful we'd packed a few warmer layers.
We packed:
Lightweight rain jacket
Rain poncho
Warm jumper or fleece
Long pants
Closed walking shoes
Small umbrella (optional)
Not So Grey Tip: Don't assume Sri Lanka is hot everywhere. The hill country has its own climate, so pack layers.
Travelling by Tuk-Tuk
Space is limited, so pack smart rather than packing more.

We packed:
Packing cubes
Daypack
Universal travel adaptor
Power bank
Phone mount
Offline Google Maps
Reusable shopping bag
Refillable water bottles
Not So Grey Tip: We found packing cubes invaluable. They kept everything organised and made living out of backpacks for 30 days surprisingly easy.

What You Don't Need to Overpack
If you forget something, don't panic. Sri Lanka has excellent supermarkets, including Keells and Cargills Food City, where you'll find toiletries, snacks, drinks and many everyday essentials.

Things We'd Do Differently Next Time
If we packed again tomorrow, we'd take fewer clothes, pack more lightweight layers and leave extra room in our backpacks. Laundry is inexpensive and easy to find throughout Sri Lanka, so there's no need to overpack.
The biggest lesson we learned? Pack lighter than you think you'll need and leave room for the unexpected (our magnet collection) it's often those unplanned moments that become the best memories.
Instead:
Things we're so glad we packed
Lightweight rain jackets (we used them far more than expected!)
A warm jumper for Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
Packing cubes.
Daypack.
Dry bag.
Universal power adaptor.
First aid kit.
Clothesline.
Offline maps.
Microfibre towel.
Mosquito repellent.
Uno Cards
Playing Cards
Combination lock cable (to lock backpacks to Tuk Tuk)
Zip lock bags
If there's one piece of advice we'd give, it's this: pack lighter than you think you'll need. Sri Lanka is an easy country to travel through, laundry services are affordable and supermarkets are well stocked if you forget something.

Focus on packing for the experiences rather than every possible "what if", and you'll enjoy the freedom that comes with travelling light. After all, the best souvenirs you'll bring home won't be in your backpack—they'll be the memories you make along the way.
